The Farmer

The LAX Farm was founded by youth lacrosse coach Steve Alvarez who saw a need in the Central Texas lacrosse community for a training program focused on boys. While there are many youth lacrosse leagues around the region, there are few lacrosse programs that focus solely on introductory training to help young boys prepare for their first season as lacrosse players.

Coach Alvarez is passionate about coaching and educating kids. A retired military officer, he has devoted countless hours of his time to help kids all around the world foster solid core personal values and learn life lessons through sports and community service. Emphasizing fun, integrity, hard work, selflessness and self-discipline, Coach Alvarez promotes values for boys that can be used both on and off the field. His unique qualifications have enabled him to coach youth basketball, baseball, soccer, lacrosse and tackle football. 

Coach Alvarez is certified in youth/men's lacrosse by:
  • U.S. Lacrosse, the sport's governing body in the United States, as a Level 1 and Level 2 Coach.
  • National Federation of State High School Associations as an Accredited Interscholastic Coach.
  • Positive Coaching Alliance as a Double Goal Coach.

He is a member of and has completed training with the National Youth Sports Coaches Association (Boys' Lacrosse) and he has received youth sports training from national organizations such as U.S. Lacrosse, the National Alliance for Youth Sports, the National Federation of State High School Associations, YMCA, Little League Baseball, Pop Warner Football, and the Positive Coaching Alliance. He has also completed training in First Aid for Coaches by the American Red Cross.

As an Army officer, Coach Alvarez held a variety of military leadership roles throughout his 25-year career where he was entrusted with the personal and professional mentorship and growth of young men and women. His years of volunteer work with kids at Big Brothers/Big Sisters was recognized when he received the General Motors Volunteer Spirit award and recognition from his alma mater, the University of Miami. His volunteer work as a trained youth leader with the Boy Scouts of America earned him the U.S. military's Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal shortly before his retirement.

Coach Alvarez holds a master's degree from the University of Colorado and he is working toward his Doctor of Education in Sports Management (Coaching) from the United States Sports Academy. He resides in Austin, Texas with his wife and their four children. Coach Alvarez volunteers as a head coach for the Vipers Lacrosse Club (Lightning Division) and he is also the club's Youth Program Director. He volunteers as the Cubmaster of Cub Scout Pack 1776 at Grandview Hills Elementary School which is chartered by the Vipers Lacrosse Club.
